According to legend, while imprisoned in a bronze tower by her father Acrisius, King of Argos, Danaë was visited by Zeus, descending as golden rain, a symbol of celestial desire, divine union, and destiny. Klimt’s artwork depicts Danaë wrapped in a royal purple veil, representing her imperial lineage as she embraces the golden stream in a moment of sensual revelation and divine transformation.
